Twitter’s API is used by vast numbers of researchers. Since 2020, there have been more than 17,500 academic papers based on the platform’s data, giving strength to the argument that Twitter owner Elon Musk has long claimed, that the platform is the “de facto town square.”

But new charges, included in documentation seen by WIRED, suggest that most organizations that have relied on API access to conduct research will now be priced out of using Twitter.

It’s the end of a long, convoluted process. On February 2, https://twitter.com/TwitterDev/status/1621026986784337922 API access would go behind a paywall in a week. (Those producing “good” content would be exempted.) A week later, he https://twitter.com/TwitterDev/status/1623467615539859456 to February 13. Unsurprisingly, that deadline also slipped by, as Twitter https://inews.co.uk/news/twitter-staff-concerned-over-massive-problems-with-site-and-warn-of-more-issues-to-come-2139083.

The company is now offering three levels of Enterprise Packages to its developer platform, according to a document sent by a Twitter rep to would-be academic customers in early March and passed on to WIRED.

The cheapest, Small Package, gives access to 50 million tweets for $42,000 a month. Higher tiers give researchers or businesses access to larger volumes of tweets—100 million and 200 million tweets respectively—and cost $125,000 and $210,000 a month. WIRED confirmed the figures with other existing free API users, who have received emails saying that the new pricing plans will take effect within months.

I don’t know if there’s an academic on the planet who could afford $42,000 a month for Twitter,” says Jeremy Blackburn, assistant professor at Binghamton University in New York and a member of the iDRAMA Lab, which analyzes hate speech on social media—including on Twitter.

As said Twitter API is used for more sentimental analysis for many research to business roadmap activities. If the academic researchers were charged $42000, then researchers could rely on alternative platforms in the future for sure. Also the researchers use and relied on Apache Nifi like open-source platforms for their sentimental analysis a lot.

I'm not sure where it's heading to but only the top analytics firms like Msigma, PWC, E&Y or Mckinsey or similar ones can afford their charges. Data in this world is charged for sure but not the way as what twitter is doing now.

What technical tools they used doesn't matter. It's all about data source. Many use case require real-time data that can only be fetched from Twitter and not anywhere else. They can't just switch to another platform and expect even remotely similar data.

Agreed your terms on using real-time data. But how about affordability for mid-sized or small orgs.

Elon is trying to make bot activity and scraping harder in general.
Yes, and I have seen a lot of software/bots in the range of $10k - $100k/month using Twitter API

It's heading to a place and price where only Twitter can afford the Twitter API.
Dunno, they seem to have disabled their own API access earlier on this week so maybe they forgot to pay their own bill?

Anyway, it means the market is open for an 'unofficial' 3rd party API to clean up all the demand. Scrapers - on your marks! ;)

This is right,

I worked on Sentiment analysis to a top telco company couple year back and it was so smooth with easy access to churns of data. I wouldn't be able to afford 42k/mo then unless the telco paid for it.

It's quite not necessary for someone like AT&T or Verizon every month, Occasionally bigger players are needed. I'd remember one of the flight booking analytics firm from Canada was scrapping the data and I don't think they use it from now on.

Good to see Elon actively ruining Twitter with his autism. He should go for reddit and discord next.

I don't think there are 1k companies willing to pay $42k/month for access to Twitter API
I think otherwise tbh, it has a lot of value for information companies etc

I modified my code to work without twitter api 6-7 months ago.
I had to scrape live data.
Seems like a good decision now.
