Pretty much everything you said is my own experience with these 'follow back' services. And, I've tried a few over time. The participants follow and then get credits or earn a small amount of money and unfollow just as quickly.

The only real way to get Twitter followers (or followers on any other social networking site) is to provide high quality tweets and information that makes them excited to read what you have to say.
