i have a question
i see plenty of people posting go to this site enter your user name
or follow these people they will follow you back etc.
in my mind this is a pointless exercise
what is the point of just having followers that are untargeted for what you are promoting?
getting 5k followers that just follow back create noise in your stream that is unmanageable and pointless in my opinion
someone please clear this up for me if i am missing something

Having lots of followers gives you some kind of authority. People see you got lots of followers, so they would respect your opinion and do whatever you tweet :)

I was gonna say this, I think an un-targeted base is necessary so the targets adds wont think youre a bot or something wierd is up...most real people have some friends and family on theirs at least... but thats just my train of thinking.

1. those services/sites are very good for building you a follower base, your twitter account seems more legit if it has a few hundred/thousand followers than if you have a only a few (even a targeted follower will follow you back with a bigger chance if you have a few thousand followers than if you have only 100ish)
2. people are selling tweets where the price is mainly based on how much followers they have, which is obviously wrong thinking, but the advertisers who buy these kind of services and don't know too much about twitter easily think if their message will be tweeted to 100k followers for $5, they made a fantastic deal, but they don't see the big picture...that those followers are untargeted people or bots and they would have made a much more better deal, if they'd pay somebody the same price who has 10k targeted followers in their niche
3. revtwt has offers which pays based on the amount of followers you have
4. twittad also pays more renting your background if you have more followers
5. there are people who still buy twitter accounts regardless if the accounts have targeted or untargeted followers (more followers=higher price)
...

and i don't really think if any of these guys who do untargeted following would bother reading the timeline of the accounts

but you need to find out that quality over quantity - what you'd like to say with your OP - is always better and what is even better: quantity from quality :)
