So Twitter considers it spam:

If your updates consist mainly of links, and not personal updates;

http://help.twitter.com/entries/18311-the-twitter-rules
But then I took a look at the Huffingtonpost account, as well and the account for several booksellers. ALL links.

Conclusion: this rule is bullshit, definitely can't get you banned if you don't do anything else. So if you keep your other ratios good and don't overdo the follow churn, you can pretty much ignore this warning.

Personal updates my ass. I care about my link-sharing brand and personal updates are annoying to customers not involved in the convo and bad for the brand.

I don't really read rules most of the time. That's nothing to worry about, really. My links are all original content with ads, so I think it's not as frowned upon. They just want an easy means to ban people if they feel like it. Though everyone has their personal horror story, I don't think most people have to worry.

My personal recommendation is to do an occasional humorous tweet or random tweet. I use trends to my jokes, though they aren't always that great. Trends can get you followers, too.

Doesn't matter to me. I just scrape the last 20 tweets every 2 minutes, remove links then post them over my thousands of accounts and stop tweeting during the midnight hours to look human. Some get suspended this way, but I am quicker to replace them than Twitter can suspend them.

this is crazy. Just because they cant police their system well they are resorting to this kind of action. Its already nofollow why are they still making such action.

yea, it's a good tactic, i also used to do that

I have said it before and i will say it again. There is no more big money in twitter. Face it guys the pool is dried up. Facebook is so much more powerful. I can target 1000 people and be getting 20-30 clicks an update rather then 2 per 1000 on twitter.

Besides the real money is in Youtube.

It all depends on the quality of your followers. If you keep most of them human (very hard to do, but can be done) and send them interesting updates, the updates get read and some even get retweeted. The trick: get human accounts, and find the ones that are on twitter all day along and target them.

I usually have a 10% CTR and 1% retweet for a single update, which is actually way too good to be true, but considering the quality of my followers it happens.

It's only to cover their backs if they ban someone and they fight the issue.

All they have to do is point them to that part of the terms.

My advice here would be the same as for all the gripes about Facebook: anyone who wants to be King of their own wildly popular Utopian social networking site that's all spam and no content, should go find some venture capitalists and start coding!
