Tweetattacks server down

This is a joke.

Fibre Channel SAN + SQL Server failover cluster + vmware ESX front ends on SSD's + multi homed internet in a datacenter with diesel generators and raised flooring for floods. I have a rack at Savvis in the same center as Yahoo.

This has absolutely no relevance? If all the server is doing is answering a call home then it doesn't need much in the way of resources. Granted there should be a backup, but you don't actually recommend anything about how to implement an effective one, your just showing off about what is in your rack.

I realise this is probably their web server as well but still, a website and answering 'calls to home' is not a resource hog. So you could justify running these services on a rented dedicated server from a BIG, mainly trusted host.

I personally would have 2 servers exactly the same. If the 'Active' falls over I would connect to the 'Backup' via KVMoIP and assign it the IP address of the 'Active' server, then I would put the 'Active' server only on an internal VLAN (To exclude external connectivity and to prevent any routing issues with 2 servers having the same IP) and diagnose/fix the problem then remove the IP altogether. It's not automatic, but it allows you to get the site/services backup reasonably quickly from when you are notified they are down (I don't really trust any automated failover systems). However, I have just doubled their monthly running costs.

SO you do always have to remember the business model of TweetAttacks. It is based on a one time fee, NOT MONTHLY PAYMENTS. The cost of hosting is always going to be on a monthly basis so they are potentially always at a loss there. Then remember that this is a business for them, so to make maximum profit they WILL get their costs as low as possible - that's business.

Granted it's not a great situation, but the TA guys HAVE reacted and no doubt have been running around tearing their hair out trying to get this sorted and they seemingly have implemented a solution. They had the right to turn around and say "It's Christmas, We will not answer support request until xyz" but they didn't... I don't even own TA, but you HAVE to give them credit for sacrificing their own holidays.

PS lucky31337 - Floors are raised in DC's so they can run power and network cables. Not to protect against flooding. Granted Savvis may have flood protection systems, but I'm sure it won't be the raised flooring. (Quick cheeky edit: They are also integral for the aircon to work - all the cold air goes under the floors to the cold aisles, the cold air gets sucked through the front of the rack/servers and is then pushed out to the hot aisle, where the hot air rises and is extracted out of from the Data Floor)

And to GiftGuru - Co-locating a server may not be the best option. With a rented Dedicated server any good host will replace any failed hardware within a matter of hours (Usually less than 1). With a co-located server, if hardware fails, it will sit in the rack broken until you either come and replace the component or you send a replacement in and get tech support to replace it.

Hi ... any news on TA? My copy won't validate and work-a-round TA suggested doesn't, well, work. I had the pro version for only a week and liked it, a great deal. If TA doesn't return, soon, I'll go elsewhere; sorry Jay. dgp

Wow, this is a very nice, level headed response. I choose this one as the best. I understand everyone's pain ,trust me. I'm just glad I have some backup tools I keep in the shed just in case.. ;)

I'll have to take your word on it...the multi millionaire circle that I run around with run their biz 24/7 non stop with no brakes.

Your "I just set it up and don't touch it and the money just comes rolling in" sounds like a great idea. I have seen those infomercials late at night.

Glad it has worked out for you. Maybe I will get there one day.

Lol.:p

If you are implying that my business and business ethics are built on something as shoddy as an infomercial then you missed the entire point of my previous post.

Nothing is ever just set and forget it; especially in IM. I never subscribe to anything that has even the slightest scent of a "magic bullet".

However, there is huge difference between working for your business and actually owning it. If you're making a lot of money but don't have any free time to enjoy it and really do what you want in life, then you don't own your business.

You're just another employee of it.

I think the real question is: When is the server going to be back up? I understand the weekend and Christmas, but now it is Monday night and the site still does not resolve. Any update from Jayson?

Though the new TA installation works, the program has some major issues!

I am experiencing the following:
1. Slow to validate license...
2. Follow/Unfollow works however from time to time you get the error about not being able to connect to database. At that point the program goes crazy and starts to follow or unfollow without any pause time between requests (DANGEROUS!! - if you do not notice this and allow it to continue, Twitter may notice and disable your account). YOU NEED TO KEEP AN EYE ON IT!!!
3. Some of the other modules work too but they also produce the database connection error! Nothing to do when you get the error but restart the program.

This is the first time I've had any issues with TA in a year. It's seemed very stable, especially now that I have a legit license for it. Hope it gets back to that stability it once had before the website going down.

I just had my main account suspended because of this second issue described above with the new install of TA! This sucks hard...

I wonder the percentage drop in Twitter stream, b'cos TA is down? I know is a lot

I just don't understand why Jayson hasn't come out since yesterday to address these issues. I have never had a problem with them before, but this is bordering on ridiculous. Now they are pushing a quick fix that doesn't work 100% and is resulting in suspended accounts. How long til the server will be up?

He already said 1and1 wont be back to help until tomorrow because they are on holiday. nothing to do right now except wait until support is back to fix the problem.

This is something I have always respected and appreciated about Yukinari84's contributions and philosophy - seeing through the supposed promise of a "magic bullet" or single point of success. You see that so much in the guru world of hype, bullshit, and snake oil.

It takes the right mix - of tools (some hand-rolled, some off the shelf), of methods (some manual and labor-intensive, some more automated and ongoing with regular monitoring and refinement, and of playgrounds.

And that said, TA is one of the best off the shelf tools, up there with scrapebox and a few others. This clusterfuck with their hosting is a painful lesson, but proof of what I've said for a long time - 1and1 is pure, unadulterated shit for services. An unfortunate choice of where TA were hosted (please Jay, for the love of all that is holy, move all your stuff elsewhere once you're recovered), but it happens. Can even happen with a better host - the one and only thing I will say in defence of the assholes @ 1and1 is yeah this happened on a major holiday (minor excuse really, mission-critical hosting is a 24-7 gig, but at least it makes 1and1 look less completely shitty...a bit).

I expect TA to be up and running eventually but without a doubt they should move to a better hosting service. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way.

So X-Mas is over... we can expect the problem to be solved today.

Ohh.. It has been 4 days,, please back to normal TA, Now and forever We are still loving you, you are my life.

sweet.. I can turn off my slow backup program now and start grindin the beast.. :P
