Turning spam into positive conversation?

Hi there; I've recently started a new blog and have received spam comments (It seems like they put their (example) reallybadbackpain.aduse) etc and sites with advertising on them. Since I am using wordpress; I have the ability to edit before I approve. Would it be wise to edit their names; delete their links and post a comment that looks like it is helpful, and then in return I could reply to that on my own time so if someone was to see the blog they would see that there are people who are commenting and saying things that are useful?
My blog is in the "wellness" niche so I think it would be a crucial part to have a sense of community so to speak.

Can you be penalized for this/any drawbacks to your site getting ranked/indexed?

It's one way of leveraging spam in your favor. However, spam is usually of such low quality (and off topic) that you'll end up rewriting the entire comment.

I've done this a lot. People like to see things that other people approve of. I go to other like sites and kind of spin the comments that they have. This helps the comments look diverse and not all from me. I even go back and reply to myself lol. I only do this until real comments start coming. I've never had a decrease in ranking due to this and I'm pretty sure that's not even possible. I say go for it, make your site look busy. I think you can even make more conversions by using fake comments.

Great idea! I can go to similar sites in my niche and copy their comments and spin them using spinner chief. I also think it makes others want to engage more when they see a articles with lots of comments instead of none.

It is definitely a good way to use spam comments, but make sure you don't alter your keywords density on the pages where you use this technique.

Brilliant idea! I think this will work. I'll add this on my Good BHW Ideas list for future implementation.

Care to expand on that? I'm not really understanding what you mean by that.
