Anyone got any experience with this?. Going through expired domains for a new affiliate site and finding good domains but when you dig into them you see they used to be for local businesses. They do not have the name of the city or anything in the actual domain name. Obviously a lot of the backlink profile comes from directory sites but also have solid links from other sites. Anyone ever took a domain like this and turned it into a successful affiliate site?

Any you wise old SEO gurus no experience?

Why not give it a try, It sounds like you found a nice domain, as long as its not banned from adsense or spammed to death, it could really help you in establishing in your target geo. I don't have experience with this but testing my keyword im targetting as a domain for my money site.

Yeah i was just hoping someone would have experience of it. Iv tried to find the answer on Google but strangely cant find much

Can you explain how to check it ?

Yes the best way to check is look at the backlinks as the data can vary I like to use ahrefs, moz and ubersuggest. I then will go onto https://archive.org/web/ and enter the domain name. You can check if the domain is indexed by searching in google site: "domain.com" and finally to check if your website was banned you can check http://www.bannedcheck.com/

What i mean is the expired domain was previously used for a local based shop. The shop closed down so they released the name. Links pointing at it are what you would expect from a location based domain. Directory links etc. As we know, ranking a site with local seo is different to how you rank a normal site. Im just wondering if anyone has took a domain like this and built an affiliate site onto it?. Do yous think google would rank keywords like " Best blah blah " or do they still class it as a local domain and not rank it

As long as you wont have any problem from the owner of the local shop, I don't see a problem, you can re-use the content and expand on to it, then send your sitemap and in Googles eyes you will have just updated the content so should rank in your area, also try and get your hosting in that location and do the usual SEO. I have not built affiliate site on that kind of domain, but I don't see a problem, as I am sure local people will like to support you. Good luck and please keep us posted

Depending on the age the domain has been expired...apparently a lot of backlinks fail to ping to expired domain if it is not parked - atleast. Eventually dropping all the ranking and making it just like any new domain. We there is no harm in leveraging if it has any residual links
