Using a dot in the name isn't bright unless you feel like giving someone else some email later on. If you want real use, you can do the + thing, but really...email addresses are sixteen cents a dozen (no really, i was going to say a dime, but they really are sixteen cents a dozen LOL).

This is not true, if you own [email protected], gmail will not allow any other users to register the username [email protected] even if they put a dot somewhere in the username, so any email you send to [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected] and etc will only be received by you. In fact, if you registered [email protected], you can log in with [email protected], or any number of variations of the username with dots in it.
