It depends on what you're going to use it on. In my experience, you have a higher learning curve for wordpress but you can do so much more with it.

For a personal/legit blog, tumblr is a lot better for building an audience and readership but if you want to sell anything or impress people, wordpress looks a lot more professional and you can do a lot more with it (wordpress.org, not .com)

Depends, what do you want to build? Wordpress has a lot more options available to you and I'd imagine easier to use blackhat techniques with, Tumblr is more for legit blogs I think.

Both are good, it's depend upon which type you good optimize, i have 2 blog both are Tumblr blog , both are #1 rank in Google with different keyword but wordpress have lots of plugin and themes, it's not a big deal which one best.

i will suggest only one point, content is always king.

Tumblr's more about building a relationship with your audience as another poster has mentioned. WP is good for just about anything though.

WordPress if your hosting it yourself.

Tumblr if you want it hosted for you.

Or use unique content on both and interlink for maximum link juice!

Personally, I'd recommend Wordpress, but to each their own.
