Yea Posterous is gone, best options for a free blog platform these days are Tumblr or Blogspot. Tumblr is probably the easiest to start building a following on but both have their strengths and weaknesses.

What's your Niche? Strategies for building up an account vary sometimes depending on the Niche but a pretty universal one seems to be becoming an active member in whatever Niche you're apart of. That means, following users, liking, reblogging, etc.
