Trying to run a simple PHP script on VPS

I have a simple php script that is normally executed by a browser.
i have a new vps and trying to get it to run.
i have been googling for different methods and havent been able to run it yet.

i have installed wamp and xampp
but still when i open the script, it simply shows text, it doesnt run it

im not sure if i am using the xampp environment correctly yet or not...
