Trying to obtain "closed" facebook group

I was checking which groups I am a member of on facebook.
I came across one which used to be "myhometown buy/sell" group.
The admin has changed the name to "CLOSED DOWN 20TH JUNE" and has posted several times telling people to join a new group that has been created.
It looks like he has disabled members from posting in the group since 20th june. So I know it's not active. But I am still a member and can visit the group.
Anyway i messaged the admin and asked why he "closed" the group down and if he could change ownership to me so I could basically have the group.
He messaged back and said "sorry the group is now closed"

The group has 10k members and I live in a remote town with a 50k population. I have a plan if I owned it so I really want it.

So my question: is he lying to me? Saying its closed, even though I can still view it?
