Trying out 7878's ORM Mail Tactic

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I work at a marketing agency full time as a web developer and strategist in Toronto and like to do marketing tests mostly online related on my spare time.

I'm going to approach the ORM direct mail tactic with dice that a user posted, I think it's 7878.

Trying this out as an experiment to see what happens with a friend and I will post my results on here.
I've picked up a large amount of envelopes, ink for my printer, some red markers and something to put in the envelope to make it feel more like a parcel.

One thing I am having trouble with/find tedious is the list building of vendors to mail to.
Does anyone know of any VA's I could hire, possibly through fiver or someone from India that could put the list together for me?
Anyone have any thoughts/recommendations on a niche service industry?

Once the list is put together I will send them out and post the results.

Any advice, ideas or tips is greatly appreciated!

I actually just tried this method out myself last week and mailed 15 letters this Monday :P

It's actually not too difficult to find the people to send the mail too, I actually just used Yelp and manually went through the businesses.

To be honest though, that took A LOT of time, especially since I tried to make each letter custom to the business. I probably spent 45-60mins per letter.

As for business niche, I targeted pretty much everyone. Narrowing it down cut down the amount of people available to target considerably. It's probably best to not narrow it down by niche, but by who needs it the most.

I'm putting together a list at the moment and i'm feeling pretty confident.
I feel when it comes down to it's all targeting businesses who would benefit from the service.

Meaning > 3 star reviews + reviewed recently + website/facebook shows marketing effort.

Only issue i'm debating is if franchises or to what size the business can be to benefit from this type of approach.
 
I wouldn't outsource any part of this. Presumably you're looking to see if this is a viable business model for you and I'm a firm believer that it's easiest to tell someone what you want when you've done it yourself.

I would make the list yourself using businesses with negative search results. Check Yelp, ROR, Glassdoor, etc. You'll find them pretty quickly.
 
Good luck with your test OP; don't forget about Foursquare, G+ & Facebook. Those are the ones my customers are most attached to, however this might be related to the location.
To find prospects you could try building a ubot script that saves all businesses with bad ratings to a CSV; I'm currently using one I built to find prospects for my web design business.
 
Never had any luck with these method. Cold calling (As already mentioned here) is the best way of getting good results. For many it's a very difficult task I know.
 
Hey Guys,

I spent the day designing a quick site to throw online.
Purchase a domain name for $10 and have filled out a batch of letters.

On the signature of the letter I throw the link to the website.
I tried designing the site as trustworthy as possible, so nearly the full site links out to various articles form reputable sources supporting the statistics and benefits of ORM.

I've put analytics on this site to monitor direct traffic which I know will be a result of the batch.

I've got roughly just over 10 envelopes sealed and ready to go.
Probably going to spend the rest of the day tomorrow working up a large batch to push out.
Hopefully going to send out around 50 letters.

This is all just for an experiment so i've very eager to see what type of responses (if any) I get. I will provide proof if any sales go through since most users i've seen haven't provided any.
Curious to hear about other people's results. Constructive criticism welcome!
 
You might get lucky with 50. But I really don't think 50 is enough. Out of my previous 100 mailings, I got 3 responses. But don't even expect responses from your first 100. This is something I'd recommend giving at least 3 mailings. Don't quit before you ever even had a chance.

Hmm, alright. Only downside i'm finding is the amount of time it takes from building the list, to printing out the review page/cover letter, to editing and mailing.
It's quite a long process.

How many responses did you get when you tried? Did they convert? How much did you charge if you dont mind me asking.

I'd also suggest being really careful with your "testimonials" - considering reviews is what you profess to assist with, when I google for eg. "Brixton Pub & Grill" and their ratings are 2.5/5 (yelp) and 3.6/10 (squaremeal) - it doesn't look promising or I google "Go Big Fitness" and the domain name is for sale - it looks fake.

when you say you're having trouble building the list, what exactly are you getting stuck on.. Do you mean just finding the right person you need to be addressing this to? Or just finding a good address/phone?

Out of the first 100 I sent, I got 3 replies and one sale. You can follow my journey here if you want.

This whole thing is a numbers and luck game. Out of those 100 letters I sent, I was lucky that one of them was smart enough to see the importance in his online reputation. I was also lucky he even opened it!

Just finding the leads that are most willing/interested in the service.

Currently I am going off - most recent review, # of reviews and an avg less than 3.0
bonus if the business has a website or any online pressence.

as far as industry type I am really going for whatever, hotels, dentists, retail, entertainment, etc.. any business I can find.

The process is also a little tedious, but I understand a single letter could potentially have a large payout, and some of these business it's crazy how poorly they are reviewed, some even have the courage to yell back at the reviewers, its insane to read haha.

I wouldn't worry to much about review age. As long as the reviews aren't all older than 3 or 4 years then you should be fine :)
