Told my grandma I do SEO. She nodded, handed me a bottle of essential oils, and said, “Rub this on your back, it helped your grandpa.”

At this point, I just tell people I fix Google. Easier than explaining link building

What’s the weirdest reaction you’ve gotten when explaining what you do?

Pre covid used to get judgemental eyes. Now, its somewhat better but I guess it doesn't matter much to me these days.

Keep secret what you do. Life is beautiful when everyone is skeptical about your earning.
always tell everyone you are struggling

except to people that you actually trust

unfortunately, it happened in life to trust the wrong people and ended bad for me

As if SEO wasn't hard enough to explain, try explaining that you write and sell software to people that do SEO.

First they struggle to understand self publishing software then it is what is software, then it is who do I work for, then it is so what is SEO, then so how do i get customers, then it's so what is SEO, then it's why would anyone want an old domain, then it is what is a domain.

I gave up trying to talk about work to normies about a decade ago. Now I literally tell them it is boring as shit and I don't wanna talk about it. It gets the conversation finished so we can talk about something a little more interesting.

When I was in the middle of my affiliate marketing career, I tried explaining to my dad what I was doing when he was over visiting. What did he take away? When he clicks on an affiliate link, someone is getting some money and he doesn't like that so he'll make sure to go to the site(s) direct. LOL

Haha, that's hilarious! I once told someone I do SEO and they asked if I fix washing machines—Google, washing machines… close enough I guess!

My dad is an old school man. He believes in traditional jobs like his own as an oil engineer. He doesn’t believe in making small money through things like watching ads or affiliate links. It’s hard to talk with him about it.
