Trick for ranking your GMB

I was having trouble ranking my local cannabis delivery service in the organic results, and I ended up coming across a trick that ranked my GMB for my target keyword instantly.

I thought it might be helpful to some of you guys so I wanted to share.

If your business' name is "Acme Painters" and the keyword you want to rank your GMB for is "house painters chicago", you simply change your business name on your GMB to "House Painters Chicago - Acme Painters"


I've only done this one time in one industry, so I can't say for sure if it will work for your business or not. But when I made this change, my GMB was ranked #1 in the 3-pack within 24 hours.

It's a well known trick, it works well, but your competitors are likely to report you if they feel like it.
 
You can also boost your GMB by picking the right primary and secondary categories and writing a clear description with your keyword. Make sure your address and phone are exactly the same everywhere online.

This is the old trick in the books, but this is also against the T&C of Google.
If you change the name of the existing business and add the KW in the name, this may lead to suspension.
Buyer Beware!
 
You should have your papers ready if you want to do that. Also having the KW in the domain also works ;)

I would recommend you be careful with that, adding exact match keywords to the business name does work fast, but it’s against Google’s guidelines and can get the profile flagged or suspended. A safer approach is to build up reviews, add keyword-rich services/descriptions, and post regular updates while keeping the name clean.
 
I tried this last year and strangely Google never changed my business name. It kept it as old. It been more than an year now and still no change.

Anything I can do?

for those with no idea what to do - try the trick on various industries
and report back your results .
 
Good to know- local SEO always has these little "hacks" but use them carefully.
 
Yep, this is a classic and it def works for a quick pop, just like you saw. The main risk, tho, is that it's a fast track to getting suspended. Had a client in the roofing space do this exact thing last year and a competitor reported them – the listing was suspended in less than a week and it was a huge pain to get back.
 
It's a fast way for suspension. My friend struggling with Google support about a month already after doing it.
 
Good to know it worked in your case. I wonder if it's just for highly local searches.
