Transparent Background for a .jpg image

It would be no problem to convert them into .gif or .png

but it is neccessary to have a .gif /.png to convert a white background to transparent?

The only way is to select the background and change it to transparent (Alpha Transparency) in Photoshop then export it as a transparent PNG.

JPG's cannot be exported as a file with transparent background.

The only other method for exporting a file which includes tranparency in the background is the GIF format. But the problem with GIF's is that the colors are reduced to only 256 as opposed to PNG whach can contain as many colors as a JPG (up to 16 Million). But the file size will be somewhat larger than a JPG.

As stated above only .GIF and .PNG can manage transparant background

And since its just a small thing to do I deleted the white background for you, wasn't sure if you want the logo there as well.

No problem at all :), use the Magic Wand Tool in Photoshop click the white background and delete it, simple as that

Don't forget to include http://www.dillerdesign.com/experiment/DD_belatedPNG/ if you need your transparent PNGs to work in IE6.

PNG files are awesome for designing, there's so many things you can do with them, but the larger filesize is the only downside.
