Transmission & VPN

Not sure if this is the right place to post


Im on a Mac and Im using Transmission to download torrents, ive had a warning from Virgin Cable my providers about unfair data usage, and to start downloading after 9pm.


Im looking for advice on a good VPN so i can continue without them snooping on me and be anonymous

Try using seed st. Best place for VPN reviews would be torrentfreak. THey recently had a post regarding which VPN client took your anonimity seriously. Can't post the link here due to permissions

Had a look, looks like they are not supporting mac osx at the moment , says coming soon. Torguard looks ok and was recommended on torrent freak.


This may sound like a really simple question


If i have 2 computers can i run one with a VPN for all my torrents etc and the other one on my regular ISP. I need constant access to several gmail accounts for work and when i tried a VPN i got the warning from google about a suspicious log in attempt , not a good look with 20+ accounts having to change passwords every time.

Did Virgin explicitly state that they do not want you to use BitTorrent? To me, it sounds more like you have hit their 'Fair Usage' cap and subsequently they are 'shaping' your traffic during peak times.

If that is the case, a VPN won't help, you'll still consume the same amount of bandwidth.

It was their Fair Usage policy, said i was spoiling it for other people , i never do more than 2gb a day at the most, some days 500meg, so not really a big player i think.

But that is not my main reason for wanting to go with a VPN, i dont want them logging what im doing as i dont trust what that company will do in the future with that info.

You do have to be careful in reading the T&C's. I'm sure everyone of this forum has fallen for the 'unlimited with fair usage' trick before - I Know I have (With Demon internet a few years ago).

You are right tho, a VPN is an effective method to hide your activity. If you use it to torrent, be sure that you use a provider that is OK with it or one that doesn't log. As mentioned by another member previously torrent-freak is a very useful website. They have reviews and they have previously questioned VPN providers on their logging policies too. It's also a good way to get an overview of the torrent scene at present.

With regards to the bandwidth. Think of a 'normal' internet connection as similar to a postcard and a VPN as similar to a letter in an envelope. You still have to walk to the post box to deliver them, but the post man cannot see the contents of the envelope. Your post man (ISP) still sees the same amount of post (bandwidth), but when it's in an envelope (VPN) the content is hidden. As in, your data still uses the same physical connection whether it is 'wrapped up' in a VPN or not.
