Translating articles: bad idea?

I had the idea of automatically translating (high quality) articles from one of my authority sites to a foreign language (not google translate).
Then have someone correct obvious grammatical mistakes and optimize keywords if neccessary.
I'd like to publish these articles on a new domain / blog at a rate of maybe 5 articles / week.
As the original articles are well researched and highly SEO optimized it would save me a lot of time.
Anyone thinks the new site could rank and is there (even a remote) possibility that google might penalize the original authority site?

Sure it'd rank. And there's a remote possibility that Google might penalize the original authority site. However, to me it's worth the risk.

Type them in their native language or hire a professional translator because those automatic translators suck.
