Hi BHW!
I'm an Spanish SEO, and I've always been inspired by more competitive and more advanced English websites, you guys are generally better at SEO, and I think that Spanish SEO will go in the same direction.
Recently I've been thinking about the possibility of creating a big website in a low competition niche in Spanish, extracting the majority of the content from sites that are ranking high for the same keywords in English. This strategy would save me a lot of time.
I wouldn't go for a crappy auto translation, instead I would check the articles manually to make them look original and high quality.
The niche would be mainly informative, since informative articles are more easy to translate than transactional ones.
Has anyone tried something similar? Do you think it can work?
