I'm thinking about translating some articles from english to another language with something like bablefish translator and posting them on non-english article directories.

Does anyone know if google picks up on the articles as duplicate content even though it's in another language?

Google will not pickup it as duplicate content... I guarantee.. Because my site is automatically translated to other 11 languages...

But the problem is, users will avoid those.. because it is not perfect to read... And except english google, other googles are not good for traffic...

I was thinking about doing this more for building backlinks rather then traffic.

you don't just get backlinks for having original content! People actually have to link to you. I could make a blog that says

that is very original but it wont get me backlinks. The translation quality DOES matter because without readers, you will have no backlinks

Without backlinks you would not have visitors ... Backlink is a backlinks and since google's algorithm can not say how good it reads most backlinked page will still be in top!

I would never recommend any body to translate the articles. As its too much of work and the quality of the article is pathetic. I think the best option are to get some Spanish articles and translate them in English. But their is not much choice in that.
I prefer rewrite popular articles. It doesn't take much time. just rephrase every sentence and add a couple of sentences of your own wherever you think can be added.
Their are two benefits first its unique and second its very clear and easy to understand.

Yeah I would agree - Power Artical Reader is a good tool i use for rewirting articlas, that and Unique Content Pro.
