Traffic Without G00gle

After the latest round of g00gle algo changes (where my white hat sites have mainly been hit), I have decided that gearing sites to rely on the G is a bad thing. Don't put all your eggs in one basket and all that.

I'm not saying I want to ignore them all together, but I want to develop my next site to gain traffic from other sources, if it gets g00gle traffic then great, but the majority should be coming from other sources.

I am new to this, but I'm sure there are a few of you who have done it before?

This is my list of promotion avenues so far-

OFF-LINE
1. Flyers
2. Print Ads
3. Word of mouth

On-Line
1. email list (this would grow slowly)
2. Video
3. Link bait
4. Article exchange
5. Article Marketing
6. Advertising

Is there anything you would ad to the list, and have you had success without relying on the G?

* Twitter / other social networks
* Pay per view
* Hard link trades with other sites that bring traffic, or script driven traffic trades
* Paid plugs / paid blog posts
* Media buys (buying ad space on other sites directly)

You're definitely following the right path! Anything you can do to insulate from Google's fluctuations is a good thing, and usually leads to better results in the serps anyway.

I personally think that it has become more important to diversify traffic. If you get 50%+ of your traffic from Google you may be in for a big surprise eventually with all their recent algo changes and the false positives that go along with it. Last year two of my sites went from receiving tens of thousands of visitors per day from Google to a tenth of that. If you are not prepared you will have a hard time. I was able to resolve the issue after three months but in those three months, earnings tanked a lot. Your best bet is diversification, build a following outside of the search engines, make use of social media sites like Twitter, Facebook or Flickr that can send a steady stream of visitors to your site. Build up an email list, try guest blog posts at blogs that receive a lot of traffic, some targeted link exchanges can also help. I personally would not buy traffic directly but a link or banner on a site can drive hundreds or even thousands of visitors your way, for the right price of course.

Hi Dave, could you give me any more info on how you use Flickr for traffic? I must admit that I use it for images and also give back by posting creative commons images, but have never really thought of it for traffic.

I know a guy who was a whiz with article marketing. Definitely worked, but still relies on G00gle to index and rank the articles.

I've tried opted in adware (media traffic) but this hasn't been successful for me. Adwords is like digging a large hole and pouring money in. (And in any case they banned me for no good reason.)
