I think without backlinks traffics will not be possible. Caz, Google will uses quality backlinks as their signals to perform traffic oriented operations. But there is an another case where we can get traffic by targeting low-competition keywords, writing quality content, and optimizing your on-page SEO. But when doing both we can win in this war!

You can get more traffic without backlinks by focusing on strong on-page SEO. In my experience, the most you can do is register an EMD domain and fill it with directories and submissions instead of expensive links. If there are no links at all, there will be no traffic.

do you know where i can get directories for different markets (languages)?
 
those days are over, when you could buy EMD domain and start ranking on day 1, with high internet usage, all niches and hidden keywords are out in public. even if you find one someone will be doing it to out rank them you have to build some links.

You can't rank 'ghdhhdjjfjhdjkkshh' let only a key phrase.

No matter how less competitive a key phrase is, you can't rank top 3 without backlinks.

You should know there are websites with topical authority (both in content and links) to the key phrase already.
