Wow this forum is awesome! I am a newbie and have got alot of help so far. My new question is about the Google keyword tool. It says it gets about 1000 searches for an exact phrase. I am actually not looking to make money on the site, its just going to be an experiment to learn SEO. Just wondering, if I manage 1 or 2 spot, does this mean I will get approx 400 to 500 hits/mth?

It means you could, but in my experience you should expect inflated numbers from all the keyword tools.

yeah in my experience the keyword tool from google inflate the numbers. I use it but always compare numbers with wordtracker.

if google say 1000/month and u manage to get first position I'll say you will get no more than 80-100 visits/month on that exact key phrase or less.

Hey!

First of all, welcome artemis7777 to the forum. I also am fairly new here to, and completely agree with the useful and helpful information currently lurking around in the forums!

Regards to your main question, it's good you have taken the first step in learning SEO. Before I set out and do something in Internet Marketing, I always test and experience with domains - this will of course give strength to your confidence in your own ability, which will ultimately lead to a positive and succeeding mentality.

No one really know how many specific searches are made per day for a specific search term - not even Google. Thay can tell you figures that have happened, but not what's going to happen.

Expectations can sometimes be harmful and can have a massive effect on attitude and mentality, as you're testing, this doesn't matter so much - but what I would suggest is to span your expectations and forecast out to relatively low figures, this way you won't be disappointed if the figures are low.

There's an ebook in the Downloads section called "The Art of SEO"; it's a real, professional book that if bought in a store would cost you around $50... that will help you massively in your experiments. They say that the top three results get 80% of the clicks, with first being a massive 68%. So, if you're second or third, expect somewhere around 5% clicks of the amount of searches made that day.

As you get familiar with your market, you'll start to learn and understand the way it moves. But, as for the given figures on Google and other tools, I would take it with a pinch of salt.

Also, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Remember, Yahoo and other search engines also will bring you organic traffic. Although Google are the biggest, it shouldn't be the only thing you should focus on.

I hope that helps :)

I agree, Googles keyword tool usually inflates numbers. You can probably only expect the numbers represented above: 80-100 maybe a bit more the first couple of months.

the traffic expectations always expect lower. They show the total you'll get per MONTH. So #1 gets like 50% of traffic or more so figure if ur not #3 + then u won't get much of that

Google keywords tool is not that accurate for few keywords.. you should expect around 100-200 visits minimum.

google numbers are neither high nor low, but they are bullshitted, one way or the other.

No keyword tool provides accurate result... You need to compare several tools to get some rough figure... On #1 spot you can expect 30% of total traffic...
