Just curious of what a typical process would be from an expert to diagnose the reason for a slow decline in traffic over several weeks/months.

Especially when it's not the 'obvious' things causing a penalty.

lose of interest from people (so, decreases of searches), seasonal keywords, losing keywords ranking, lose of engagement, increase of bounce rate...

First thing I'd look at is your traffic sources. Are they all usually organic?

If they are - have you slowly been declining within your rankings?

I don't think you've shared enough details on why your traffic has dropped.

Were you posting new content or did you stop posting content?

Did you make any changes to your site?

Your question is very vague because you're saying that it's not an "obvious thing" which caused the penalty.

How can you be so sure?
