Btw, my initial question was. I rank no 3 for a keyword with 17k searches, but just get 5 visits a day. Is the google tool this inaccurate? I would have thought I'd get atleast 100 a day from ranking 3rd. The keyword is "desserts recipes". The site is dessertsrecipes dot net

EDIT

The points you'll have brought up about the structure etc are really helpful. I will be changing it back to the old structure. Can you'll please check out the blog page. Is that okay as a front page?

heres the link

Code:
http://www.dessertsrecipes.net/blog/
That is what the front page was earlier, but I just made the frontpage static in wordpress and put the opt in form. Is it better to change it back.

Its actually an autoblog.

got to top one then surely you will have some traffic am sure.

My problem is as my title describes, and before you say that no one is searching for the keyword, the keyword is "desserts recipes". It gets 17000ish searches a month according to google, and according to my browser, it is 3rd in google. But it's barely getting 5 visitors a day from this search term.

Can someone please check where it ranks in their browser. The site is dessertsrecipes dot net

Also, what could be the reason for such low visitors? Is there something wrong with my description that no-ones clicking...

Your issue is that people looking for this want a blog with some freebies stuff, then an offer on the sidelines...not a direct sales page or email signup box like this. Frank's optin page won't work in this case. These people are not marketers and don't understand an optin box. Infact, it scares them.

Be aware that all of those people you are targeting work in sewing/cooking/crafting/martha stewert-esque type groups and chat back and forth. The word of mouth advertising in these types of niches is overwhelming in some cases.

Convert to a blog, post a couple of free example recipes from the product to get them interested and have them sign up for the rest...they will in a heart beat.

That is what I had till two days ago. But this should impact bounce rate not traffic. I had a simple blog with recipes, but was not earning any money from it. So converted the home page to an opt in page.

But can someone confirm that its in the top 10 for desserts recipes

i just searched it i google and it is showing up in the 3rd position.

and i double checked to make sure your adsense was working too.

it is. ;)

You really need some more content to be ranking better. Almost all of the text on your front page are links, and the rest of the page is images. As someone suggested, add some free recipes and more content.

As for the traffic, I have the same problem. Market Samurai says my keyword gets 7000 searches a day - but I'm ranking #4-5 and only get about 100 uniques a day from that keyword. I think you need to concentrate in hitting #1.

@OP:

First, read very carefully what hexalor posted... he's dead on with his advice.

Second, I want to add that it might be even easier to get them on your email list, if you wouldn't let them sign up for your ebook at all. Let them sign up to just get notified whenever you post a new recipe to your blog. That's the least "threatening" approach.

I agree with aftershock to a degree, but I don't understand what he means by "these people are not marketers". Email gathering is not just for marketing niches :)

What I mean by that is exactly what you pointed out. These people aren't trained by guru tactics to respond accordingly to such an aggressive opt-in page like that.

Exposing them to such an overwhelming and new sales page tactic that they aren't used to will force them right off the page.

Basically the same thing you said, just in a different way.

As for your comment above, I completely agree that email gathering isn't just for marketing niches. Of course not. However, there are definently different styles and techniques in approach and presentation. That's my p.o.v. on the issue.

Hope that clears up any confusion on my intent for you.

I totally agree. Go back to the blog structure, get your traffic back and then offer them a newsletter/email notice of new content being posted.

OK I know I am just a lowly newbie here and BHW is so cool to me that I am trying to start contributing more. I am afraid that this post might start a riot but I will post it anyway and some ppl might think about it but some will cry BS. What I am about say however is based on my own actual data and experience.

You already answered your question and I hate to say it but no one is searching of deserts recipe. Now all these other replies are fine and dandy but the subject was traffic not page conversion. Until the page gets a visitor what does all that good info mean to the opp? That said I have to make the humble argument that using the Adsense KW tool in order to find these low volume searches with not much competition is great but the numbers reported are far far from the gospel truth and just not accurate.

The tool is there as a means of sharing data for potential adwords BUYERS and the numbers that you are looking at are not exactly what searches there are BUT rather the potential views you will get on your ad and even with that interpretation they are a bit inflated IMO ( There I said it ). OK before I get laughed out of the building let me share that I have placed in the top 5 for KW with 1,000,000 searches a month and got a small small fraction of this predicted number.

1. Tweak the listing in the index on Google and yes CTR will go up
2. improve rank and get in the top 2 and yeah CTR will go up
3. Even with all this you will only find that your result is a FRACTION of what you expect if you based your numbers entirely on the data you got from this research alone.

My advise is to not just embrace these numbers but to target some more related KW and get some more pages cooking as was mentioned earlier. Also a softer pitch with more permission based marketing like was mentioned earlier might help after you get more KW's listing in the top 5 of Google.

Not flamming you here, just a quick question...Did you spell it right?

' Dessert Recipes ' has plenty of traffic, where ' Desert Recipes ' has none.

Desert = sandy wasteland.

Dessert = baked goodness.

- you rank #12 on my browser - try clearing your cookies / enter through a proxy to see a more unbiased result.

- to answer your question, if it was me clicking through on google, I probably would have started surfing through the other sites ahead of you until I found a few things I was looking for. 70% of the sites ahead of you have quite a bit of content to get lost in, and would have probably clicked on 3 or 4 of them before even seeing your site. Google is answering my question (ie show me websites with desserts recipes) and most of the websites on the 1st page are answering my question (show me desserts recipes) therefore as a searcher

- hexalor is spot on with the other comments

i'm seeing you as #3 for desserts recipes

the word 'free' in the title is a little off-putting for me. people already have the assumption that all websites hosting dessert recipes would be giving them away for free, so the fact that you had to put 'free' in the title just makes your site look spammy.

the keyword tool isn't accurate all the time. a way to measure the traffic directly is to place an adwords ad for your exact keyword and have it run 24/7 for a few days. if you do this and find that you actually are getting 17000 impressions per day, and are in position 3, then the only possible reason you're not getting any visitors is due to your title and description. so then you'd need to change that to something more appealing.

I have a site with the kw getting 60k searches a month. I am sitting in 5 spot, and only getting about 20 visits. But it make sales because it is targeted.

Hey guys, those of you talking about the structure of my site etc. I just changed it to an email opt in yest, and that can't be the reason of my low traffic, cause I used to get the same traffic even when I had the other structure. (Click on blog to see my earlier structure of my front page)
Also, the clickers wouldn't know what is there. I am not talking about conversions, just the number of visitors I'm getting..

Ah, gotcha. That is a different situation all together.

If you are going from position 3 with a keyword search volume of 1700 and you are only getting 5 of those people visiting you, it probably means that the first two sites are simply giving them what they want before you have the chance to do the same.

That is a pretty profitable and competitive niche with the unique market it pushes to. Betty Crocker understood just how much of a great niche it is and took full advantage of dominating it.

In this case, I would pay close attention to the actual links that google is giving to your site when you appear in the search results. Compare your title and description tags to the couple of links beating you and see how they are coming up.

IF they aren't clicking into your site, then they aren't seeing what they are looking for. Target a few tighter niche traffic groups with the way you write your title and description copy.

Test, review and test again, improving on what works.

It isn't always about dealing with just search engines when working your seo to rank, it is about being what the people want to see and need when you get infront of them.

Hope this helps.

Yep, thats probably it. Also, the google keywords tool is completely wrong for this keyword. It says 17,000 searches a month, but google webmaster tools impressions says about 50-60 impressions a day, so the keyword probably gets only 2k searches a month. [Which is very surprising since I would have thought that many more people search for desserts recipes than 2000, considering that product names on clickbank also get searched for 3k times]

Doesn't surprise me at all.

Just research more keywords in relation to that niche and you will find some of higher interest right now. People are hardcore on the health kick right now, so leaning for this as a PART but not all of your overall business will help offset the down times.

It is simply living by the old cliche' " Don't put all your eggs in one basket " rule of thumb. Just because your site is targeted as a dessert recipe site, that doesn't mean you can expand into other recipe offers, especially HEALTHY dessert recipe ideas.

As for the keyword issue, google has screwed themselves with messing with those tools and they need to redesign the whole thing to update every 6-8 hours instead of once every week, only processing the data from the week before, then averaging out the monthly estimates for what we see as search results.

It isn't at all accurate.

The webmaster tool is much more so, however, it is based on the same technology. These days, it is best to test multiple keyword tools, not just google, then play the law of averages in your favor by split testing the heck out of them and see what actually gets results.

Food for thought.

Just Xrumer blast the top competitors into a google sandbox. ;)

Please tell me you are joking here...heh.

Um, no. Step up and prove yourself as having the skill to beat them on a legitimate level. Doing this sort of thing only invites the same ' special kindness ' to come back on you.

Don't stoop the that level, man. IF you have to do that, it just proves that you haven't got the skills to handle the task in the first place.

From looking at the site and also putting it in Google, You are currently not above the fold and this is what makes your business when it comes to driving traffic.

You have to be above the fold. Also when I get to your site if your main goal is to
build your list then you must make sure that opt in box is above the fold. You have
a good call to action with the arrows but it must be above the fold.

This way you will be able to convert a majority of the traffic that you get.
