
The website I see as #8 for "77 recipes" is http://greatist.com/health/healthy-crock-pot-recipes
Lets use that for this example. Next I measure the factors I think matter the most for the search term and I identify which ones my website is deficient in.

Anytime my website is lower than #1 or page 1 average for a factor I mark it as red. The orange cells are statistically significant correlation coefficients that indicate that these factors appear to move the needle in terms of rankings for this keyword.
As you can see #8 is not ideally tuned to be competitive against number 1 OR the average measures for page one. So the key is going to be measuring you competitors and continuing to tune until you reach competitive parity.
Technically all you need to do this kind of analysis is a spreadsheet.
