Market Samurai's SEO Comp module is probably the best in my opinion. It shows a lot of different metrics for the top 10 websites in Google and it also lets you insert custom urls to compare.
I think that Senuke's is junk because it is only looking at allintitle: (last time I checked) and I don't think that is nearly enough to assess the competition.

I know a tool
You go to google, type your kwd and look how many results you have.
Then you type the same kwd with " ".
Then you go to google adwords tool to see how many searches that kwd has a month.
Do this for your new kwd, do this for a kwd you already done SEO for. So you can compare if it is harder or easier.
That's what I do. (The adwords part is to see if it's worth SEO-ing in the first place.)

Apart from the excellent data provided by MS, make sure you check one more thing. Go to backlinkwatchdotcom and check out the anchor text being used in all backlink most frequently. If it is the same keyword you were looking to get top ranking for, then this could mean more tougher competition.
Lots of backlinks+keyword in meta tags+keyword in anchor text of backlinks+good domain age = Tough Competition (Choose another keyword, this could take a year to break into )
