Is there any way to calculate the traffic a competitor's website is driving? Their sites are too small or new to show up on places like alexa or other web stat sites. Suggestions?

That's not possible. There is not way you can calculate a website traffic without getting an access to its analytics data. Maybe you can use Google adPlanner to get some overview, but, it wont work on small sites like you mentioned, only big ones that spend money on advertising.

If he has Awstats you can attempt to access it. Some webmasters forget to password lock it.

I guess there are some paid tools that can track your comps but you cannot trust them 100% as nothing is perfect.

I'm not certain that it's possible, unfortunately.

A few SEO tools can give you some insight into your competitors backlink profile and ranking situation but I haven't personally come across one that can give accurate traffic statistics.

As someone mentioned earlier, those details are near-impossible to track unless you've actually got the capabilities to let an analytics program access the back end of the site directly.

May I ask why you're so interested in the amount of visitors your competitor gets as opposed to, say, what keywords they're chasing?

Great feedback guys, thanks.
Guess I'll live without the stats, but I love numbers... :(

You can get the stats through Alexa, but its not so helpful.
