What is the best (preferably free) tool to check monthly search volume on google? I tried some of them but they are limited. Is there any extension addon I should install?

keywordseverywhere dot org is very helpful free tool. It's results match with that of Ubersuggest.
 
You can use keyword planner( but it no longer gives exact search volume, only an interval), or try the free tool in my signature
 
If you prefer free then I will suggest you to use extensions
1. Keyword surfur,
2. ubersuggest,
3. keyword everywhere
These are some free extension you can use
