I have a link exchange with a related website, I have added a link to their site on my links page and they have added my link to their blogroll.
It's a wordpress.com blog which has related content dating back to the beginning of 2012 and I'm current showing 514 links after 2 months in webmaster tools. I have 685 links in total so, takes up a large majority of the links

Would this look spammy to Google?

Request them for a contextual link rather than a blogroll link.

Having tons of blogroll links may look suspicious, but they still send link juice. Either way, contextual links are still the best. Looking at your competitors and who's ranking in the top 10, and then looking at what kind of links they have, never hurts either. Can give you great insight.

Latest tests shows that blogroll links can easily throw keyword from SERP

if its niche related blog roll with less obl you ll have more advantage and lesser risk

Do you have a relationship with this blog? Link exchange are more social in nature than any other kind of links, so if there's an ongoing relationship between you and that blog's owner (i.e. you comment on each other's blog post, network on social media, etc.) you're on the safe side of the river.

Link exchange is only risky when you drop a link and forget it.
