Too late to purchase AMR?

Seems like the softwares been out for a while and theres now some mixed reviews. Has its time come and gone? Or is it still the best option for its price?

Depends on what you need done.

It can still submit articles to decent quality article directories, but that's pretty much it.

AMR is pretty new product and it is one of my top softwares that I ever bought. Why do you think that the time is gone for AMR?

AMR is still a great piece of software for getting article links, which are still good to have in your overall SEO plan.

Personally, I don't think you need to hit 1000s of smaller directories like AMR provides, I've found that just hitting a few dozen of the top sites can help work wonders. In that case, you can get a tool more specialized to just target the top main article directories.

Everyone has different opinions, that's just what I've seen after testing different approaches.

amr it's not bad. It's a good tool, but it has some bugs, working really slow sometimes

So may I ask, how would I go about finding which article directories are the top ones to submit to, Do you have any examples?

Also if only targetting the top directories, what kind of tools are available - and are they worth it?

I guess I think its too late, because I see a lot of people posting how its hurt their rank, or not as effective as before.

It's a tool, not a magic stick. It will do what you ask it to do. I think your question should be, if the article marketing is still effective.
