So I use torrents to "acquire" necessary things every now and then. And up until recently, I was forced to use a capped network connection, which meant I only had limited data to use on my torrents.
I decided to make the most of this by reducing my upload speed to the bare minimum while downloading torrents, so I could save on usage. I got used to speeds of around 500 kbps +/- over the years.
Recently, I was fortunate enough to upgrade to a 100 mbps fiber line, which I assumed would make for faster downloads. I was disappointed. While they were slightly quicker, I was experiencing a max of 800 kbps - 1 mbps on torrents.
Until yesterday, when I was discussing the slow speeds with my brother who mentioned in passing that he doesn't limit his upload speed and he gets super quick downloads. So I decided to give it a try. The change was amazing. I managed to bump my speed up to 9 mbps, and the file I was downloading went from "2 days remaining" to "50 minutes remaining".
The moral of the story is, if you're impatient like me, don't be a dick. Seed your torrents.
