To those who believe that ChatGPT will replace Google

ChatGPT just follow your command and collect data for you. It is not a search engine like goggle. ChatGPT help you some specific work , it have no ability to replace you. At the same time it not replace Google and its not possible.

Isn't that exactly what Google does when you run a search query - follow your command, collect the relevant data and display it to you? Why would I sift through 10 search results when I can get an easily digestible answer right upfront? Think about what a featured snippet is for a second - isn't it similar to what chat gpt does?

It's not actually similar to featured snippets. Google updates the snippets periodically, whereas ChatGPT shows the same answers until it's trained with current data. As someone said earlier in this post, it's trained with the data collected before 2021, which means it's working with outdated data that's two years old.
 
I am assuming that here that a smarter model that can learn as time progresses can easily be created.
There are self learning AI models available already in the market.

My humble point is please don't look at Chat GPT as just what it is right now. Think of what is easily possible if Google can make a model just like it (and with the kind of money it has, there is no doubt that Google can do it).

If Google doesn't do it - Microsoft has already bought into OpenAI, and very soon will integrate it in their Bing search. Google will have to follow suite to remain competitive.

The possibility to use this as a format to answer search queries in the future is what my concern is.

Absolutely, google gives content writers credit whereas chatgpt just steals others' work

Well.... without humans, all these AI writers are useless

PS: I won't be surprised that if these AI chatbots grow they'll be forced to cite the sources at very least or we'll be able to brock their bots, just like with search engines.

To your first post I agree - the reliability of these chatbots is still questionable. The answers can be very wrong.

I used to work in news at one point. Google killed news by becoming an aggregator - the people who make it don't get any ad revenue, because who goes to a news channel to search for news on the internet?

Google gets most of it without doing anything.

Hence I wouldn't be surprised if content creators get screwed over in the long term, if Google decides to go the chat route.

The only thing stopping them is the reliability of the answers.

That's why features snippets worry me - they are Google telling us - this is we think is the right answer.

OK, I have a question.
For example, I use yahoo and yahoo pay publishers.
On the other hand google and FB are news aggregators so if I want to read an article I still need to go to the publisher's site... Am I missing something?
PS: Australia already forces G and FB to pay publishers.
 
You're assuming people go and read all news articles. People scroll through the news and only read the ones that truly interest them.
Otherwise, a quick scroll of the headlines is good enough for most, in which case on doesn't have to go anywhere outside google.
This way google gets all the ad revenue and news publishers get nothing.

That is exactly why Australian government has forced them to pay up to the publishers.
But at least the news guys had money and could lobby the government - think what would happen to individual bloggers and content creators?

You are right. Google's Featured Snippets are regularly updated, whereas ChatGPT displays the same answers until it is trained with new information.

Yes, I think you are right because, Chat gpt was going to be paid and google is free to all. Any one can search freely and what they want. But, now Chat Gpt is free but, in few months it was going to paid and then the popularity of Chat gpt will gone down because, many people not want to pay for this, they can use google.

You are wrong to compare them. In fact, this is just a beta test of the GPT. Give it a year and internet access and everything becomes clear. Let's compare.
You write "buy a cell phone with a good camera for under $600".
What does google show you? It will give you a link to an iPhone 14 on amazon. And a few forums that mention "good camera".
What will a GPT with internet access give you?
1. I've compared all the phone tests. Based on them this phone here has the best camera in your price range agree 100500 studies.
2. Here are the verified store links. I filtered out for you fake stores (the disease of google ads)
3. Here are the links on ebay, it will be a little cheaper, but there is a risk of dishonest seller. But I compared sellers and selected reliable.
4. Here I have selected sellers from China, will be even cheaper.
And all this will be summarized in a text of 500 characters.
Now answer me, how much time will you spend on such a search using Google?
