Whilst doing my competitive scanning of websites for search terms I want to appear for, I effectively come across a website with a backdoor open where I can change html content. They are ranked higher than me, how could I use this to my advantage.

You shouldn't redirect, but you should try to set 2 do-follow backlinks to your site. They shouldn't be very easy to see so they will not notice this for years if you are lucky. May I know what type of backdoor you use? Maybe other members here at bhw would profit from using it as well.

Why will you do that ? Going to help only till your competitor finds out better yet work to rank your site. Point out this loophole to the site owner and ask for a link, he might willingly give it which might stay up permanent.

Sristy, great idea and I think I do just that, though I thought black hat seo was finding holes in websites to place a link, or manipulate an opportunity?

Nope, blackhat means ranking websites with methods violating the Google guidelines, the self proclaimed rules of some search engine company.

While using loopholes, manipulating sites, hacking sites if often referred to as blackhat, too, that's not what most of us do...especially since even using an open backdoor is considered hacking in many countries and classified as a crime.
