Title change or google dance

Hi all,
I changed my homepage title nearly 2 weeks ago,was on page 1 of google for my 2 main keywords.My serps the following day were destroyed for my 2 keywords,homepage disappeared from serps for about a week,currently on page 5!.I am doing ok for my longer tail keywords.
In a panic I started researching this and found that you should not mess(at least not too much!) with an existing title tag if you are doing ok in the serps(site is approx 6mths old),it can be very damaging to the results as I have now found out.
Originally I had my site name in the title tag,I removed this to make room for a few more characters but kept my primary keyword at the start.My question is should I return to the original title or leave the new one,any advice would be appreciated,I continue to build backlinks in the mean time anyway.

where was the site name - at the start of the title or at the end of it ?

I don't think it should be problem... You will come back soon. I have changed title several times with my different sites and never had this kind of problem. Fall in ranking could be because of different reasons, you need to do further digging.
 
Yes, sounds like you have not devalued your title tag at all. I would leave it maybe 1-2 more weeks and hopefully you shall pop up higher than before
 
Hi there mate

I did something similar a couple of weeks ago. I had a long tailed keyword as my title and I changed it to something shorter and more reader friendly. I went from 8 on the first page to about 80 or something like that.

I too waited for about two weeks thinking it will come back. It never came back and I went back and changed the title, adding an extra keyword this time. Both my titles had my main keywords as the first two words.

I came back at 7 :-)

Go ahead and change it back to the old title. I bet you will come back to the first page.

Cheers guys,I think I will leave it for as long as I can(temptation is to just change it straight back),and if theres no change Ill try the old title.My new title is showing,page 1,for 1 (not primary)keyword but the keyword beside it is page 2 or 3,frustrating stuff.
