Here's a couple of tips I employ whilst blog commenting. I think it's important to employ these to make your blog commenting more effective.

Make a relevant comment - Surely this is common sense, but I can't stress how often I've found a gem - a great high quality blog post, ruined by shitty comments. If you're going to comment to build backlinks, at least contribute something that won't be flagged as spam. Don't reply with 'Thanks for sharing' or 'Nice post'.

Trackbacks and Pingbacks - Last week I contacted a blog owner and asked her if she minded me republishing a couple of her articles on my blog with a backlink. Over the past few days, I've acquired three or four Pingbacks to my article. I now have myself some pretty decent backlinks from sites I have no idea about. You can also use Pingbacks to build some backlinks by including a link to an article on your site. The author of the original article may accept the Pingback and give you a nice little backlink after the post.

Email Addresses - Don't use a spammy email address. Something like '[email protected]' is bound to get flagged. Use something more professional, like '[email protected]'. Even if you have to buy a new domain name, just add a forwarder and create an authentic looking email address.

Comment Stucture - Not only do I see a lot of comments containing a junk message, but it seems a lot of people are even too lazy to structure their comment. If the blog doesn't have a URL field, then don't just insert 3 random URLs in your comment - it's inevitably going to get removed. Make it look more professional, IE:

I agree with the point you made Obama. I wonder how things would be going now if the election had taken a different turn? I'd be interested in what you think.

Luke,
Domain.com

Be different - Address a commentor, not the content - Rather than post a shitty sentence about something half-related to the content, read through the comments and find a genuine reply. Either address him (IE: @Mike), or quote his post. Direct a reply to him, and ask him a question regarding his comment.

Be sly - This is my personal favourite and it always works. It's especially useful of you're commenting on a .edu blog and don't have the slightest clue about the topic. If the blog includes an external link, leave a comment stating that you're interested in reading more about whatever but the link seems to be down. Most authors/moderators will not even suspect you of spamming, and check the link. Servers crash all the time, and are back up again a few hours later. Post something like this:

Thanks for sharing the link - but unfortunately it seems to be down? Does anybody have a mirror or another source?

I can guarantee that the above method is effective. Think outside the box, especially when it comes to high quality .gov and .edu pages. Everybody's competing for some link juice, but if you look different then you can get away with it.

These are good tips if you have to worry about getting past moderation.

If you want to get a lot of links fast, then you need to find non moderated sites. There are plenty of good ones out there. I've been doing things this way for a long time and I can't think why people would struggle with moderators for a 10-20% comment success rate for all the time and effort put in reading posts and making relevant comments.

All my blog comments are relevant to my own niche so google will pick up on the sorrounding text around my links.

Good advice. IMO too many of us are only interested in dropping our link. If you leave thoughtful comments that add value to a blog, the blog's author may follow your link and return the favor (provided your in the same/related niche). But if you leave some poorly written comment that adds nothing of value, it's not getting approved.

Nice tips...I also don't make junky comments but don't know why many of my posts don't get approved...May be i need to improve on the above tips!!! :)

Nice post thanks for sharing.... only joking :)

Thanks for the tips, i like the link is down idea!

Google policy = bullshit! Comment Spam still alive days after days for years and I was never penalized by Google. Big G just post that to say "Hey n00bs! Don't comment spam or you will be penalized!" lol

I agree with you on that, but I do concentrate on employing the tips mentioned above when posting on high quality and moderated posts. When it comes to quantity, I pay others to spam comments on low quality blogs, and ultimately you get what you pay for. But when I do my own blog commenting, I prefer quality and search for those gems buried in the dirt - High PR posts, .gov and .edu, authoritative moderated posts etc.
