So I have a keyword that has like 3m searches.
How much would I need to invest in order to rank it? Not number one but maybe top 10.

How long's a piece of string? Man, nobody is going to be able to give you an accurate (or worthwhile) answer without more info. If you're new to this, start out by ranking some genuinely low-comp keywords. That will give you a good idea about time/investment needed before mixing it up with the big-boys.

whos to know the keyword could very well be in a dud market with 0 comp 0 authority pages
also I personally won't bother a keyword with that kind of volume would get a constant re index shuffle... rigged I tell you!

No way of knowing without details, But if its a one word keyword, maybe $10,000 minimum?

Not sure why you wish to rank for one keyword. the most effective SEO is to get ranked for 3 or 4 word phrases. A single word can have too many ambiguities. Eg take "protection", which can mean from the rain, contraception, health and safety at work, financial and on...
