Note: This post relates directly to my adult oriented website, but will likely apply to ANY niche. Incase you don't know already, I make most of my money off of a small handful of adult oriented sites. One of them is an image sharing website with pictures of amateurs showing off their goods. In order to bring this site to the next level, I decided to integrate it with Twitter, and see if I couldn't top off with a little bit more traffic. The idea: Automatically post a link to an image on twitter once every $x hours with a random pair of hashtags to get people's attention. The Solution: I got down and dirty and wrote myself a PHP script, dropped in a cron job, and everything was set. The auto-tweet feature is now on auto-pilot. Hurray. The Result: I generated an extra ~100 uniques per day with 500+ more hits. Conversions were intermittent. I immediately began to revamp the solution. The Problem: I had set the interval to run once every 5 hours. Why is that a problem? Because for the most part, people aren't looking at porn throughout the day. A majority of my site's hits occur between 7pm EST -> 2AM EST. The next logical step is to look at when the relevant hash-tags are being searched and posted. At this point, roll on over to Hashtags.org and see what kind of statistics you can put together. I got my peak points where those tags are conversation pieces, and started evolving my script (but, of course, this can be done by hand too, if you prefer to take the hands on approach to your tweets). Now, I only tweet between 1pm EST -> 7AM est. This hits all of my major viewers. Additionally, the hashtags being used are time-targeted to flow with standard Twitter trends. After making this change and letting it run for 2 weeks, I gained an additional 2,400 followers on Twitter, and every time I tweet, these links are hit by at least 500 unique visitors, typically more than 900. Amazing results for a little bit of research. Lesson Learned!
