TikTok algorithm for sharing videos and virality

I found out that recorded videos are going viral 100% more then uploaded videos.

How did I test this? Very simple.
I downloaded viral video from Facebook (very engaging) and uploaded it on TikTok.
Guess what? For 4 days I got 0 views.

Then I play the same video on my PC and while playing I recorded the monitor with my phone camera. I positioned the camera at best angle and light so the final video would look much more real and not like recorded from a PC monitor. Then I added few effects to look even more real.

I uploaded the video to the same TikTok account and for 1 day I got 5000 likes.

I tested this with more videos and I got the same results.

So the conclusion is that TikTok is not showing your uploaded videos from other sources. They only show the videos uploaded from your phone camera....

I think this is done to make the platform more unique and not crowded with video re-uploads, downloaded from other websites like Instagram and Facebook.

Damn this could be really true.


If there only would be a app to emulate the camera, I heard about that but never found something.
 
Look like a justifiable message. Even I have faced these kinds of situations, but I have never dig into it as OP did.
 
Nice find! Although more tests might be called for, just one comparison could just be due to luck.
 
Well i can say it is the same for my account.
I have poster around 60 viral videos that i grabbed from instagram. They got from 500-50k views.
Posted 1 single video that i recorded myself and boom ... it is close to 500k now.
It might be luck... im not sure about it
 
It would make sense but it would be discriminating and sabotaging people who used a video editing software or something.

Yes but I think this is the goal of tiktok.

They don't want crazy edited videos they want this amateur style. TikTok is mostly famous because of the dance videos or something, they want people to use their functions. If people record on tiktok and they want to use it somewhere else they will have tiktok Brandmark on it.

BUT I also saw crazy good edited videos getting viral, maybe it's just easier for the videos recorded in tiktok.

You would have to try out with some camera emulating software or smth. But first you have to find some software like this.

Thanks for sharing this observation. I asked a friend advertising on TikTok, and he confirmed the same.
 
Now we need some kind of camera emulator or damn good camera to record from our PC Monitors :D

Did you record with the in-app TikTok camera or phone camera? I read somewhere that the algorithm favours videos made with the in-app camera more.

Yes, with the in app camera. I found that the inapp camera gives the video unique filename for tiktok
 
Not strictly true - I uploaded a video which I originally recorded on the Snapchat app. The video was stored on Snapchat's system and I downloaded it to my camera roll (wasn't stored directly onto camera roll)

Reuploaded to TikTok with some music.. BAM. 240k+ views in 2-3 days

Perhaps, however, the Snapchat app records the same EXIF metadata as if I used the Raw camera app, and that's how they check it?

Again the source of the video is your camera. There is some kind of footprint left in the recording by your camera's hardware.
 
Definitely not true... taken many videos from IG and Youtube and had millions of views. Seems like it's just your account or a coincidence
