Thoughts on Dubstep

Its seems to be everywhere at the moment, what are your thoughts on it?
Recently bought Dubstep Rejectz Vol 1 and all though there's a few bits i don't like i have to admit the vast majority i liked.
Never really listened to it much prior to that...
Cant stand this skrillex kid though, his stuff sounds like 2 washing machines making love.

I love my wobbles and drops.

But the whole genre is kind of like one continuous song. I only listen for up to 30 mins at a time in the background. It's good "get pumped and crush this work" music.

I like all kinds of music.

I'm trained in Jazz though, and play instruments. So I'm really tainted in what I enjoy. Funk, Fusion, Dixieland, Jazz... That's the stuff when you're trained to listen to it.

Some dubstep... It's just too repetitive and whiny. Like a lot of hardcore(death metal) I used to listen to, repetitive and whiny.

In the area of techno, I like Aphex Twin, Crystal Method, Prodigy. I enjoy a lot of trance too.

yeah, that kind of electronic music is what I WAS into when I was younger, when the average song was like 24 minutes long and didnt sound rehashed.

I think it used to be more about the song and not about building up for one drop or drops that happen over and over

EDIT: Perfect example of what is meant by being a continuous song. Yeah 17:00 - 19:50 is good, but it isn't as good without the previous minutes of the song.

Old Joker is sick, real hip hop/glitch vibes going on- love it.

What I see as true dubstep, are ppl like Digital Mystikz, some old school sounds.

Newer stuff which I have been enjoying include people like Cally D = pretty unknown chilled dusbtep/ chillstep, Enigma Dubz = not the heavy filth, but his other stuff. Also Breakage has been killing it for a while.

Dubstep is more than just filthy baselines, it's a more diverse genre than people give it credit.

Mate i love that chilled stuff to, its really wierd that you mentioned Enigma Dubz. My fav chilled / melodic dubstep track at the moment is this by Audio Rejectz
When you look at there page they have a Gotye Remix up by Enigma Dubz, saying something bout him been a mate so they thought they would help promote it. And underneath Enigma Dubz has Thanked them.. When i saw that i actually thought Audio Rejectz were Enigma Dubz or he was apart of them.

Well i don't listen it at all but some of the tracks are quite ok.

This joker's stuck in system is awesome and some other his tracks. Found it probably 3 years ago at certain imageboard. One of those mindfucking timeless tracks.

i like trance, techno, dance, ambient. but dubstep still rubs me the wrong way. like someone else said, transformers.

Honestly, DubStep is breakbeat type music ... which to me makes it harder to dance to .. takes more effort to 'listen' to it.

Techno, house and trance are all steady beat and generally a lot more flowy.

Plus Dubstep is super aggressive and loud, however I have been to some Dubstep shows which were definitely off the hook ... really just depends on the vibe and atmosphere, I wouldn't just put on some dubstep at home though.

I'm starting to geek on chillout dubstep. Mt. Eden especially. Slow and fat like Saturn I like to say. I'm also very partial to the Datsik and Downlink duo. They bring out the best in each other except for their last CD. It didn't suck but it wasn't fiya. I want to start programming soon. This instructional video is amazing:

Ive been into electronic music ( underground house ) since 1990.

Dubstep has been around for a while but only hit the US mainstream within the past few years. The quality dubstep hasnt seen the light of day. Since its now the new fad all your typical high school chaps that mad fun of you for listening to techno back in 1995 think they are the coolest Bros since they got the new skrillex album.


Its all about shelf life my friends. Underground house will always have a solid shelf life. It will never be the next new fad and im 100% ok with that. Even though certain styles of electronic music have become mainstream and everyday pop music, I still do my thing as I always have done and will continue to do so.

Im 30 years old now and I find myself talking as if I am 60. (back in my day when we had raves stupid bullshit like LMFAO wouldnt fly and they would probably get beatup for pulling that bullshit) But alas we are in a shift where the underground meets the mainstream. The hacker / blackhat seo styles are now becoming a household name. No longer can we be separated from the norm as the alternative lifestyle is now transforming into a typical choir of a 18 year old.

I first listened dubstep around 2005-6 i think, when it was new underground thing breaki9ng through. This dubstep which kids listen today like skrillex is a PIECE OF SHIT! it ain't dubstep, it's dubcrap

Not all of it, that video i put above of the audio rejectz for me shows that it can also be soft and melodic. But i will admit that most of it is as you described
