When I was just learning seo I bought lots of low quality links and now I want a clean link profile. Do low quality links devalue new high quality links I am earning. Are these bad links just ignored in google’s algorithms or are they toxic and damaging?

They ignore most bad links.

It's about intent tho. If they detect that you did these links on purpose, it hurts your rankings. Anyway, nobody knows for sure.

Disavowing has worked for me once in a while, but not always. I guess they inject uncertainty into the mix to keep us in the dark.

On Barts point… I had rented homepage links, when I stopped paying for those rented links my rankings gone up!
that’s why I agree google will penalize links if they feel it’s intentional even without giving you a manual penalty.

I'd like to purchase some low quality back links for a competitor's site... anyone able to do this?
