Until a couple of weeks ago you can force Google to recheck that specific page for reindexing purposes, but bloody bastards kill the indexers as well.

It's a content blog with revenue mostly generated from ads, so ppc isn't really an option.

Great links are a big thing, but they aren't everything. Is the site content compelling, in the sense of people wanting to see it or come back to it? Are the onpage elements optimized? Are the keywods used truly lower comp?

As I've already covered, I'm fairly confident in my on-page and on the engagement of the website (average session duration is over 5 mins). I'm at 120,000 page views a month for February (180,000 during September 2019, it's seasonal), and I understand keyword competition well.
My question was around the effectiveness of Niche Edits. Which everyone seems to be using to great success, so there's probably something else at play that I'm missing.

If they were savvy enough to buy an expired domain, I'd bet there are some good hidden PBN'S pushing them too.

That's definitely possible.

I know there's a very competent SEO working in the Niche, he blogs about it on his SEO blog. Claims to make over $20,000 a month in the niche and over $100,000 a year from just one post. It wouldn't surprise me if there were other less vocal SEOs behind other websites.
