Hi,

I'm doing a significant amount of link building to a 2008 established site, and many of my rankings have started going down. They don't appear to be dancing.

Just every day I check rankings, they're 2-3 places down from the day before, or unchanged. Almost NEVER going up. If so, then it's up 1 and then down 2-3 the next day.

My strategy:

1. Wikis (nofollow and ********, keyword and generic anchors
2. Link pushes (worked great on all my other sites except this one which has a history of ranking drops already).
3. ******** and nofollow comments (manual, no keyword name... url in the body, no anchor)
4. Strong paid links from other site owners in the vertical.

My rankings have been consistently dropping daily for over a month.... bit by bit... no -50 etc penalty-type drops.... just every day, dropping slowly.

Is this normal?

Is it a Christmas related site? If yes your competitors may be really scaling up with their SEO efforts compared to you!

Great point, thanks for the out-of-the-box suggestion but it's not even close to christmas related. Not even seasonal

Also check the rate that your links get deleted in MajesticSEO with a free account. If you create today 1000 links and you constantly lose 200-300 of them, then that would affect your rankings.

You could have also lost a couple of major links from authority domains; it could even be an old link from an authority domain that simply died! Even if you had a PR6 link for free, and it was suddenly no-followed it could probably create a fluctuation.

I haven't ever used MJSeo - just signed up and added it.

I'm sure that at least 5% of the wiki links get removed within 1 day of placement. My other links, probably are all still there as it's mostly white hat.

How are you checking the rate at which links are lost?

I ran a report and I can see this:

I agree on continuing linkbuilding.

In majestic check the column called "backlinks breakdown"; it's the one with the flags. The last one is called "deleted" and it counts the number of links that upon recrawl were deleted. If it's high compared to your total backlinks count then you may have a problem.

What is more I see a very huge blast of links at the start of the previous month, 55.000 links from 850 domains. That's a pretty big pool of links that may get deleted, especially if it's AA comments that may get cleared out, non-followed, deleted alltogether etc, since most come from few domains.
