so true... google loves links pocking back to websites. google machines are targeting the same pattern of backlinking strategies. if back linking is done by SEO tools like SeNuke, UD then there are 100's of people using same templates and pattern to create backlinks which surely trigger their machine algorithm and this is what google is trying to hunt down.
Yes there are evidence where Matt's team is manually reviewing websites and possibly they are going after person to person.

100%. But it is getting harder in that there are higher barriers of entry to newbies/the less well resourced (technical, financial, competitive) than even 18 months ago

Unfortunately what Gorang talks about is not the first time something like this has happened. It happens regularly. @Matt Cutts, you will be interested to know there is in production, a documentary being made about "Google Gate" - a number of similar issues raised above will be highlighted. So keep adding fuel to the fire Matt... it will just make for a better watch. No doubt you WILL be sacked when all of this is brought to public attention. It is not "black hatters" creating an uneven playing field. It is Google with their unclear, "if your face doesn't fit" mentality that is doing this. Google could easily be mistaken for a Dictatorship. In particular Privacy laws are constantly breached, anti-competitive practices and the preferential treatment from Google of large brands over the local business is a real eye opener. Lets not forget the high number of lawsuits racking up against Google. In particular Rockstar Consortium which is a group of companies, including Apple, Ericsson, Microsoft, BlackBerry, and Sony, that purchased a collection of 6,000 patents and patent applications from the bankrupt Nortel in 2011 sued Google, and others for infringement of some of those patents. The arrogance and gloating shown by the "head of web spam" is "like viewing your drunk uncle trying to dance at a wedding reception". If this behavior happened within any other blue chip organization it would be met with instant dismissal. So wind your neck in Cutts as you will be outed....very soon. You could do your job with dignity and try to educate, work on improving how poor webmaster tools is would be a good start; rather then spend your time filling your twitter feed with photos of you making biscuits, photos of your sweaty t-shirts and gloating that you hit 1 network out of several thousand. If you were paid on performance it would be an EPIC FAIL.

Noobs need to grasp the concept that ranking in Google is merely ONE route to generating visitors/traffic. Bing is constantly improving, and at a faster rate then Google is. Many tablets and computers now come with Bing as the default browser. Social media such as facebook, twitter, pinterest and forums are the present and future of internet marketing. Try and GET OUT of the habitual mind set of "must rank in Google to be successful" it is simply NOT TRUE.

I'll buy this documentary even if it costs more than xrumer. Like many others here I've seen the history of SEO happen from the beginning and I'd like to see what such a documentary has to reveal about Google.
One other thing: I'm sure everyone knows who Matt Cutts's first employer was? It has 3 letters and it ain't KFC.

So to summarise then - "agent" blackhat went "undercover" and decided to goad Matt Cutts until he bit because he "needed to know how Google can penalise you" and got a hint at some of the answers he wanted when he discovered that his disguise was more Clouseau than Sherlock Holmes and Google squashed him like a flea?
Man, if you're going to do something so crazy you need to make sure you're 100% certain that they can't track you down BEFORE you do it, and honestly why would you want to do that?
If I have a system or method or trick that works and gets my sites ranking I want to keep my head down and do it quietly in a nice quiet little niche somewhere, not stick my head up over the parapet while waving a big red flag and shouting "Coo-eeee Google, I'm over hee-re".
I choose this method because I am under no illusions that I am tiny and insignificant by comparison to Google and they would also squash me like a flea if I did that.

Good point, maybe he thought Matt Cutts wasn't smart enough or didn't have the resources to track him down and whois privacy is enough to stop a domain registrar from identifying you.
I do silly things when I've had a beer or 3 which is why I've stopped drinking, maybe it was beer fuelled bravado that was his undoing?

I believe they have already done so partially. I'm judging by the latest PR update - there was a major drop in PR for many domains. Sometimes going to extremes, from PR6-PR7 to PR1.
Such a change could happen only in two scenarios:
1. Pagerank algorithm was changed. This one is highly unlikely, the math behind PR is elegant with no obvious flaws, and there is no reason to change it.
2. Someone "disabled" half of the Internet. Technically, someone gave weight 0 to a large portion of backlinks.
My guess is that the latter happened, and I bet its Google Disavow Tool that finally backfired.

You really think those were "Gorangs" real name, accounts and photos. Lol. With many case studies carried out. It was a simple yet effective "sting" and Cutts got caught "red handed"... Again, it all just makes Cutts look ridiculous. Each day he acts more like the scarecrow from the Wizard of OZ then "head of web spam". Again, if he represented any other organization he would be fired.
Do I think that Cutts actually tracked down "Gorangs" real identity - yes.
That would honestly be great, but I think that Mr. Cutts was 1 step ahead in this instance. I hope I'm wrong tho -_-
