I published an article on medium.com in january 2020. I never did any off-page seo. Just published and left it there. For 5 months zero (0) traffic from google or from any other external sources. Then after 7 months from its initial publishing, it fully ranked well on google on its own and started to bring daily organic search traffic.

So, can we say without any link building it's possible to rank after some time? Second question, if I did link building in the first months, would this period be shortened?

That's what it means when they say "seo is dead".

As a form of marketing it requires 5 to 7 months and then it's random anyway.

But it seems like younger folks like the WWW the way it is : controlled, standard and everyone producing content to Google's liking.

I miss Geocities and the chaos of the early (free libre) WWW.

Bloody heck, you must be pretty close in age to me then. I had a page on Geocities as well. My GF at the time designed it for me, because like today, I'm still artistically challenged hehe.

The entire university I attended in 1994 ran of a 9600 byte modem!

It helps a lot that you posted it on MEDIUM.COM which has a very strong domain authority

Without backlinks, you're looking at a minimum 9 months to (in very competitive niches) a year or more of 'sandbox' time if you didn't start off with medium's strong domain authority
