Thinking to quit smoking..

quit smoking would be the best decision you make in your life!

p/s: for those who is looking for a way, should try the ebook in my previous post. (torrent & rapidshare links given). hope the author dont sue me. just trying to help. :P

I smoked for 10 years, until I got a bad cough and went to the doctor office. That visit set off two weeks worth of CAT Scan, Ultrasounds, X-rays and lots of blood tests. I ended up having three different doctors tell me I had lymphoma (cancer). One of those doctors was an oncologist who treated my grandmother before she died.

They ended up doing surgery to get a biopsy to find out if it was Hodgkins or non-Hodgkins lymphoma. They went down through my neck. I now have a cool looking 2 inch long scar in the middle of my neck. (I tell people I got stabbed while trying to break up a mugging!!! But I can't say it with a straight face!)

Guess what. All the doctors were wrong. But it was enough for me to quit smoking.

That's a pretty courageous story, and the fact that you can tell it with a sense of humor is very encouraging. Were your doctors ever able to determine what it was that caused them to believe you had lymphoma?

'...Try acupuncture.

They don't stick needles in you, they stick them in your cigarettes. Works every time.

Emphysema through smoking killed my Father and Cancer through smoking killed my best friend.

I have never smoked, apart from I had to light up a cigarette for a magic routine I used to do.

Now alcohol is a different matter. After twenty years living in Spain with Spanish Champagne (Cava) at under $2.00 a bottle and wine cheaper than water and now Thailand with 80% proof Rum, Scotch or Brandy at $5.50 a bottle it would be wrong not to indulge.

Your liver is evil and must be punished...lol

Great read scubaslick, I have always been affraid of the weight gain aspect of it, Because sitting in front of a computer 8hrs a day really takes it tool on a persons weight. I have wanted to quit for a while but always have that mindset, "It's to hard", "I will turn into an a**hole", you know, we have all thought of the side effects we will face when trying to quit.

On the other hand, Nothing gives you more motivation that your 6yr old son coming up to you when you are getting ready to light up and saying "Dad, are you going to die?" No son why?, "Well smoking kills people and you smoke"

That will get you really thinking....

Theres motivation right there...

just my 2cents.

The CAT scans and x-rays showed that my lymph nodes in my chest wre extremely inflamed. My blood work showed extremely high levels of white blood cells, suggesting my body was aggressively fighting something. That information, combined with my somking, getting sick, shortness of breath and other stuff are characteristic of lymphoma. Basically, everything and every test they were doing on me was coming back as saying cancer, cancer, cancer!

Turned out to be a disease called Sarcoidosis. Really nothing serious, most people never even know they have this disease.

Wiki*pedia Sarcoidosis Page: hxxp://en.wiki*pedia.org/wiki/Sarcoidosis

The funny thing is, Sarcoidosis is most commonly found in Black Women. I'm a White Man! They say about 5 in 100,000 white men are affected with this disease.

But, I'll tell you, being 25 years old at the time, with a two year old little girl, that's some scary sh*t to be told you have cancer, and to be talking to the doctor's about chemo. Not fun.

You feel amazing after giving up smoking Its the best decision I ever made. Like Clix said your energy level sky rockets and the money that I would spend on smoking is now spent on petrol.

I am 15yr Smoker & Toker....

Tomorrow I will be Cigarette free for 8 months!! The Toking.. well I'm gonna keep that :)

BUT YES!!! My energy has returned not to mention I can taste my fucking food again!!

My wife and I tried to Quit at the same time, I obviously work at home (WOOT!!) and she works out of the home. She found it difficult to quit due to other people out on lunch lighting up in front of her.. and so she still smokes .. but alas I DON'T!! U CAN DO IT!!

Then again I have always been strong willed, I am one of those type of people that believes I am in control of my body.. I also quit a wicked coke habit of 5 years on my own about 10yrs back as well. So it can be done with no meds, and no group.. Fk Groups... they just remind you of your problem everyday. I find it best to put that shit out of your mind and find something else to occupy it.

I kept thinking about the fucking fat cats sitting in their offices at RJ Reynolds (Cigg company) thumbing thru their cash as my widow and children watch me suffer on chemo therapy.. they laugh .. smirk a lil and tell their grand kids about the great cigarette scam that made their family fortune as well as the government that let them do it to us.

Don't let them fool you.. cigarettes is big business.. as ruthless as oil or alcohol They make money on the suffering of others, only difference is they kick enough money to uncle sam that they are allowed to kill us off.. sort of an approved culling I suppose.. keeps the population down I suspect? Meh.. I just hate the thought of it all being perfectly fine to do to us.

yup... just to keep big pharm happy... :(

prob the correct mindset for quit smoking is more important than whatever drug u consider using.

anyway, hope all those who wanna quit smoking: " get those exos pipe out of your mouth soon!" good luck.

The problem I have is that I can stop smoking quite easily but whenever I go out for a few drinks it is just not the same. I physically start to feel shit if I don't have a cigarette when drunk. This may well be my brain playing tricks with me. I have recently stopped for almost 3 weeks until the other night when we had a huge pissup.

Lol i was thinking of starting..... And yea i smoking is kinda reliving my stress. im really stressed out... Kinda alone and well going to be broke soon witha 20k Skool debt getting closer and closer....

Your body controls you more than you thought about. The solution is either to stay sober, or to get drunk in a wine cellar where no cigarettes are available.
Okay, with no jokes, you have to stay away of too much stress, too much tiredness, too much hunger and too much thirst. I this way it will be easier to not think about smoking. Believe me, as I had quit smoking a few times, it is easier to stay far away of temptations, than to not fall into them.

As for the Chantix guys.. you should read this..

http://naturalhealthnews.blogspot.com/2008/01/art-bell-fell-for-dangers-of-chantix.html

I'm not a tree hugger but I do believe that we take a SHITLOAD of USELESS Drugs everyday just to keep Big Pharm happy... :P

Substituting a drug (nicotine) with another (Chantix etc.) is not a real solution to the problem.

Your 20,000 dollar school debts are nothing compared to the medical bills you will incur if you begin smoking. In addition, if you are flat ass busted, I wouldn't recommend throwing away your money on a 5+ dollar per pack habit.

smoking relief stress? stop smoking makes you feel like shit?

these are the myth and misconception most smoker have.

Well... you should start considering "craving for cigarette makes you feel like shit... and smoking is the cause of the uneasy feeling rather than relieving it!"
... just like heroin addicts need a dose of heroin when the symptoms of craving starts. and heroin IS the CAUSE rather than the solution!!!

I gave up smoking (I smoked for 15 years 30 a day) 6 months ago and was the best thing I did. It was hard, but I really wanted to do it.

I used an electric cigarette, just look on ebay for it. It is an initial expense, which I think is good as you are more likely to use it if you paid through the nose for it. Because you actually smoke it it replaces the cigarette completely, no patch, no gum, no drugs. The smoke is just steam, so cannot harm you in any way. You can get the cartridges with or without nicotine and with different levels so you can cut down slowly.

I did it without nicotine and my husband did it with nicotine, both ways work if you want to do it. I stopped using the electric cigarette about 3 months go. I wanted a cigarette really badly, so I had one, but was ill. Head spinning and feeling sick, so now I will never touch another one again or the electric one.

I read at my doctors that after not smoking for 5 years it is as if you never smoked with regards to your lungs.

Good Luck !!!!

...

Great congratulations xxkixx !

Your shared story helps others to gather the spiritual powers needed to quit smoking.

don't quit smoking you'll die, what a stupid question of course you should quit

I used Chantix and quit. It's not a substitute drug, you only take it for a few months. I only took it for 2 months and haven't had a smoke in almost a year. I was a pack a day smoker for quite a few years before that. Currently, Chantix is going through trials for combating cocaine and alcohol dependency issues at U Penn and the short-term success rates are looking good. People who have taken it before probably know why.

The behavioral and suicidal issues are an entirely different and far uglier situation. Many people with mental disorders smoke as a way of self medicating. Some of the same factors that predispose someone to nicotine addiction (and we now know that this is a genetic predisposition) also predispose individuals to certain kinds of mental disease; schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder, for example. When that form of behavioral self-medication is removed from the individuals daily ritual, it begins an unpinning process. The reason why people harm themselves or have those thoughts is because they've successfully quit, not because of the drug itself which works on only a few highly specific neurotransmitters.

The actual research on Chantix shows not a causal pattern, as laypeople, bloggers, and other hack journalists have interpreted and stated, but rather a pattern that is far more telling of the number of individuals who self medicate with cigarettes. Because most cigarette smokers also abuse other chemicals (alcohol and caffeine especially) and Chantix works on the same neurotransmitters that would bring feelings of "peace" or "joy" to the body from imbibing other chemicals, individuals on Chantix often begin to find little to no pleasure from other substances they've come to self-medicate with. This, for obvious reasons, can cause serious problems. The distinction may seem slight, but scientifically it is rather important and is one of the main reasons why varenicline hasn't been taken off the shelves.

Great thread and love scubaslick method, you should get an ebook out at least.
There is no defence for smoking, but I do enjoy it, and you will never quit unless you want to. It is the perfect addiction.
1: Chemical, nicotine (one drop of pure nicotine on your skin could kill you)
2: Habit ( when the phone rings, make a coffee, or wait for PC to update, I light up)
3: Social (not so much now, as here in UK, we cannot smoke in any enclosed public space)
4: Physical (something in your hands)

I have however started a using electronic cigarettes, and it is working well. When I am at the PC, I only use the electronic one, and it is helping. They only contain nicotine, and I have cut down on the cancer sticks dramatically. Good luck to all quitters.
