MLM or multi level marketing is just another form of marketing, which uses a method called Direct Sales.
It structures you within the company as sort of a franchisee who profits on their own business they are able to build, and by leveraging network marketing to maximize your growth and profits.
Those are the key things - leveraging network marketing.
I know a doctor who was nominated for the nobel prize, who started a publicly traded company based on this type of business model. 20 years ago. And today it is making over 200 million per year. Every single person is on autoship and receive the products every month, and every month the commissions are paid, through infinity on how ever deep you can build your network.
We use a strategy called "Help 3 get 3" and we teach this to others, so that they are able to duplicate the leveraging aspect. Send me a PM and I can plug you in, my network marketing manager is a dentist with several offices on auto pilot, and he just promotes the business opportunity we have and he makes about 85k a month from that alone, with this 20 year old publicly traded company.

so basically in MLM I buy a product, say " herbalife " and then make other people buy it ...
Can it be done online ? like can I promote a refferal link of the "herbalife" products, and then whoever bought is in my "pyramid " + I get a comission off his purchase ?
