Thinking about selling Hip-Hop Beats.

So a friend of mine is really good at making beats and stuff. I thought it would be a good idea to start selling them because he has been working on them for years and has thousands of them he can put up. I was wondering where would be the place to start for selling these beats. I think I am going to set up a WordPress for him and stuff and he can do the rest on bigger hip-hip/rap forums. Did anybody here sell music in the past?

My friend probably knows them. I am personally not that big into rap although I don't mind the beats themselves. I am more into metal and more into the instrumental.
 
one of biggest acts in the industry, built their base online, not through corny stuff like soulja boy, but actually legit way.

Hmm interesting. If I knew anything about social media (I hardly dwell in that marketing) I'd say set-up a fan page or something. Maybe put up some samples and then ad a viral script + CPA offer to get the rest of the beats. I don't know.
 
I am pretty sure he made a fan page and knows a lot of people. Facebook is definitely a good way to go.
 
If you are planning to build a site for you friend, I can give you some low competition, high search volume keywords in hip hop niche. :)

Well I produce music so I can help.

First set-up a soundcloud and upload 30-sec snippet of the tracks.

Create a facebook page to promote and maby even a paypal shop use (/blackhat-seo/facebook/401775-free-facebook-fanpage-creator-system.html) to make the page look official.

If he is actually good upload a beat-tape to datpiff.

Yeah, you need to set-up a soundclick asap.

Best thing to do is send your best beats to artists free of charge, and hope they use them. Obviously you need to come up with a tag, so people know it's you that made them.

For more information, look up producers like Johnny Julliano, Lex Lugar and Harry Fraud
 
trust me, theres people making 5k-15k a month from just selling beats on soundclick. Its really crazy the amount of money Juliano, lexi banks, & vybe see. i wish i had a promo bot for soundclick

I have a beat website and now I am working on just promoting it. It is a long and hard process to do so make sure you stay focus.
 
Best thing for you to do is find a digi distributor. Osao distribution was one of the best but something shady happened and jon is now with beatports distro and Osao is no longer around. Typically they split the sales 80% you / 20% them. They can put your music out on almost every respectable digi download site known to man.
 
Yeah like a few people recommended I'd start out on Soundclick first where you can sell them and have access to a larger network.
 
best way to sell is get people to your own site with a flash player on it. there are many flash player with store integration (money comes to your paypal). all you need to do is upload the beats
to the player and promote the site=bring traffic =) why a own site? on sites like soundclick, it is a big competion.
 
Is there a need for guitar music - licks, riffs in different styles? I'd rather be playing my guitar all day lol
 
Any ideas of a particular flash player/store I could use on my website? I'm building a beat site as we speak.
