How much should I avoid thin content sites?

I am building a site on a niche, and I post thin content on trending stories.
Most of the time, this story is something like: "Check out this new video" plus 50 words or so.

The new stories don't really lend themselves to rich content.

How bad is it to use thin content to keep my site fresh?

not bad actually, in SEO to things matter the most. Having back links and content.

seen websites with such content that had really good traffic.

as long as its good content and no duplicate it should be fine, google loves good content and the more the better.

Really? I've heard that google dislikes thin content sites, and that you should shoot for > 500 word per article.

its not that google dislikes thin content but it prefers more content the more good content the better the chance for good ranking.

I'm not sure how much content influences your sites SERP position, but it is definitely meant for human visitors. Google mainly wants us to create content for humans, not so much for SEO benefit.

G loves fresh, original content. It's still very much a text based beast.

For a small site, I'd say start off with 4-5 pages of a minimum 500-600 words each of original content.

Then add more pages, depending on what you want to achieve this can be anything from several pages/posts a day to once a week/month.

Actually, video is sort of content that you are delivering to your user... its just in different shape.

If you are using thin content on your website, make sure you are giving a keyword rich informative description. So that if user landed on your page, he should spend some time in watching the video.

And, do not optimize your website for irrelevant keywords in order to drive more traffic to your website.
