There is any way to Rank Without a Single Backlink?

Today I met with a friend and he is saying that ranking on 1st page of Google without any backlink is possible. I discussed it for 2 hours.

And, he proved me because he is ranking for most competitive keyword No#1 on Google without having too many backlinks.

He made a single backlink on a highly relevant website and ranking No#1. How is it possible?

Yes, if it's for a keyword with practically no competition that no one else is trying to rank for. For example, I'd imagine it would be quite easy to rank for the long tail kw "purple elephant poot ramma lamma ding-dong" without any backlinks whatsoever.
 
it might be by chance because I have also noticed some website with very few backlinks and still ranking on top. This does not mean he can rank any website without any backlink. It could be that he is using all PBN and all spiders are blocked, so you can not see their backlinks
 
He owns a website with one article or he added an article to an existing website he doesn't own?
 
Can be done, once Google finds the site and the competition is not high it can rank well

Terms with little to no competition are fairly easy to rank for, especially local.
 
Having a site with content, keywords, and diverse and/or plentiful traffic are factors in rankings. Money making sites have the opportunity to gain those things immediately when promoted correctly.

Maybe if you went viral on a facebook post linking to your site, you would get traffic and ranking before backlinks. Traffic based ranking updates may occur more often than backlink ones.
 
Possible if the content is very good, great onpage optimization and low competition keyword.
 
Easy - create the absolute, unquestionable, inarguable, best page on the entire Internet for a particular term. Make it so good that anyone who looks at it couldn't possibly imagine how any page about that particular topic could possibly be better.

And yes, it helps if it's a low or zero-competition keyword.

I had that once last year. One of my site ranked #1 for a bunch of keywords (low comp) after 5 months of creation. I think it didn't gradually move to #1, it got from who knows where (I pretty much abandoned the site, didn't monitor its ranking) straight to #1. I made that assupmtion because one day, traffic suddenly exploded out of nowhere. But that was around May 2018.

All I did was on-page and not a single link or share. It's a rather small site with homepage and 3 support blog articles.

After the site ranked and got some nice traffic and money, I did send diversity and PBN links to it. That lasted until earlier this year then the site finally got penalized (blackhat niche and spammy links were the reason I think).
